When looking at the state of affairs around us, many people are wondering what we can do to change things.  To answer this, we can look at what was meant by Gandhi when he said: “Be the change you wish to see in the world”.  This phrase means more than just to work on ourselves for our own benefit (although there are certainly great rewards at this level alone).

Something many people have difficulty with is taking care of themselves, making themselves a priority.  I saw it regularly when I was a personal trainer and even more in people’s personal and spiritual lives. Think about this for a minute: how do you take care of yourself? Do you take 5-10 minutes a day to stop and be connected with the Higher Power you believe in? How many times do you feel stressed about doing what you’re doing or stressed about getting it done so you can have time to go do something else? The fact is the stress you’re inducing has no usefulness and it actually slows your efforts down. Silence is around every noise, underneath every sound and waiting at the end of every echo.  Speaking from a mental construct, you can say that silence is what "isn't" as opposed to what "is".  In life our attention is drawn to what is; what stands out, but what is behind all the sounds that are standing out?  Silence.
